Wedding Commission
In 2016, I had the pleasure of being commissioned to design an illustration to go onto a cushion. The client was very specific about the image they wanted; A romantic scene of Marine Lake in Canada which was the meeting place of her two friends who had recently got married. The cushion was to be wedding gift.

Funnily enough, I had just returned from travelling around the Canadian Rockies for a month, so I had a great sense of how beautiful the scenery should be. After coming up with a nice composition and a warm, romantic colour pallet, I decided to work digitally rather than my traditional watercolour style. I find that I have a lot more control when working digitally, and I can be much more specific and detailed. I do miss the freedom and playfulness of watercolour though.

Does the client always approve the design?
Yes! I always send my designs to the client before creating the final product. I sent the digital copy to the client before sending it off to be printed, and she loved the design and couldn’t wait for the cushion to arrive.
Unfortunately the delivery company didn’t deliver the cushion after waiting for two weeks. I sent for a new cushion and when she received the it, I was so happy to see how much she loved it! After an angry letter from both me and my client, the delivery company apologized and paid compensation.
Another week later and the original cushion… cushion no.1… arrived back at my house! Along with a note saying it had been wrongfully delivered to a house in Brighton – four doors down from my client!
My wonderful client thought the whole thing was hilarious and asked if she could have the original cushion too and paid me again- plus a tip! Bless!
Later, I posted a picture of the finished cushion on my Instagram account, and strangely enough, the Canadian newlyweds found it! Their comments were so lovely and I’m so happy my designs have gone international!
